Serena High School junior Kassie Milam reaches into the refrigerator amongst a host of items being served for patrons at a recent volleyball game. Many girls volunteer from the school, which provides them work experience and allows them to interact with classmates. Being served in the background are Verna and Bob Dutton of Arlington Heights, who came to watch their granddaughter, Taylor White, play volleyball for Christian Liberty School.

For the 30th year, Beverly Gondolfi of Marseilles was out in front of her house on Halloween in her hand-made Big Bird costume to pass out treats to neighborhood children. Among the visitors this year was James "Chop" Clark Jr. — a 5-year-old when he first met the local Big Bird — who brought his 19-month-old son, Aaron. They are the son and grandson of Jim and Sally Clark of Marseilles.

Students at Jefferson Elementary School in Ottawa collected paper goods for the Illinois Valley Public Action to Deliver Shelter facility in October after hearing the homeless shelter opened its doors again Oct. 1 and was in need of items such as paper plates, paper cups, plastic silverware, paper towels and toilet paper. The motto for Jefferson's student council is "together we can" and together students brought in many supplies that were needed.

The fall colors slowly fade near the Illinois River at Allen Park. Recent rains have raised the water level and also helped brighten the color of the leaves. The river crested at 25.48 feet at La Salle on Sunday. The flood stage is 20 feet, with moderate flood stage at 27 feet. The river has begun to fall, and with dry weather expected in the coming days, the river is expected to dip below flood stage by this weekend.
