To support fellow union members affect by upcoming layoffs, members from Local United Steel Workers 657 at Illinois Cement in La Salle last week donated several boxes of food to Ottawa Glass Workers Local 19. With the food are (from left shaking hands) John Roth, president of Glass Workers 19, and Steve Turri, USW 657 treasurer, with Turri's daughter, Isabella, looking on. The USW local built up a stockpile of food for its own members during its recent contract negotiations, which ran past the deadline. When a settlement was reached, it gave the USW the opportunity to donate to a union in need. Roth said he and the 25 Glass Workers members who are to be laid off next month appreciated the donation.

The Park Church and Friends La Salle County Relay For Life team is raffling a quilt — recording the 16-year history of the La Salle County event — to raise funds for the fight against cancer. The drawing will be held midnight at the event set for Friday and Saturday, June 15 and 16, in Streator City Park. The quilt was handcrafted by Helen Cheatham of Grand Ridge and quilted by Bonnie Clark of Marseilles. Tickets will cost $5 each or 3 for $10.

Starved Rock ABATE has distributed 41 proclamations to La Salle, Bureau and Putnam County villages, cities and County Boards to proclaim May as 'Motorcycle Awareness Month.' Starved Rock Chapter has done this to enhance and promote motorcycle safety, education, and awareness. It is ABATE's desire that many incidents can be prevented from occurring on Illinois roadways by creating awareness of sharing the roadways safely.

The LaSalle County Farm Bureau came to Kimes School in Streator to award Anna Nelson with the first place prize for the National Agriculture Week coloring contest. The judges of the contest were the LaSalle County Farm Bureau Young Leaders Committee (a committee made up of farmers between the ages of 18 and 35). All other students who participated in the contest received a gift certificate to Dairy Queen.
