Headline: Leland looks back on history with sesquicentennial celebration
Leland's Second Schoolhouse was built in 1856 and replaced the first school which occupied a room over a store. It was in turn replaced in 1900 by a three-story brick school. (Not the current school.) Later, a new school was built on Main Street to replace the brick school which still stands on Locust Street. The red brick school finally closed in 1960.

Headline: Fatal Studebaker connected Moline man and grandparents
On June 22, 2009, David J. Kahn (at left in green shirt) and his grandmother, Julie M. Hogan, (getting out of the black Studebaker Hawk), both of Moline, socialized with other members of the Big Six River Bend Studebaker Drivers' Club after a meet in Moline. Four days later, Hogan was killed and Kahn critically injured in a crash as they took the Hawk to an antique car meet in Pontiac.

The proceeds from the event will build an outdoor reading area at the library, 120 E. Si Johnson Ave., Sheridan.

A farmer inspects his corn field in Harding. Farmers planted an unexpectedly large crop of corn and soybeans this year, easing some fears of rising food costs. The U.S. Department of Agriculture said Tuesday a record 77.5 million acres of soybeans were planted through June, up 1.8 million acres from last year. Farmers also planted 87 million acres of corn, up 1 million acres from last year and the second-largest corn acreage in more than 60 years.
