Setup Instructions for Windows NT 3.51

1. Install Remote Access Service

  1. From Program Manager double-click on the Main program group icon.
  2. Double-click on the Control Panel icon.
  3. Double-click on the Network icon.
  4. One of three things will occur:
    • If you are prompted to install Windows NT Networking, go to section 1A.
    • If Remote Access Service does not appear in the list of Installed Network Software, go to section 1B.
    • If Remote Access Service appears in the list of Installed Network Software, go to section 1C.

1A. Install Windows NT Networking

  1. Click Yes on the installation prompt.
  2. Enter the full path to the Windows NT installation files.
  3. Click Continue, and then Do Not Detect.
  4. Click Remote to install Remote Access Service.
  5. Check Connectivity Utilities. All other componants are optional.
  6. Uncheck Enable Automatic DHCP Configuration, and click Continue.
  7. Select the port your modem is installed in and click OK, and then OK again to let Remote Access Setup attempt to detect your modem.
  8. If your modem is detected, click OK. If your modem is not detected, contact your modem manufacturer for an updated modem.inf file.
  9. For Port Usage select Dial Out Only and click OK.
  10. You may receive a notice that automatic restoration of network connections has been disabled. Simply click OK if this happens.
  11. Click the Network button, uncheck NetBEUI, and click OK.
  12. Check TCP/IP, uncheck IPX, and click OK.
  13. Click Continue and then OK.
  14. If you receive a notice about NetBEUI, click OK.
  15. For Member of choose Workgroup.
  16. In the Workgroup box type WORKGROUP.
  17. Click OK, and then click Restart Computer.
  18. Continue with section 2.

1B. Enabling Remote Access Service

  1. Click Add Software.
  2. Select Remote Access Service from the drop-down menu and click Continue.
  3. Enter the full path to the Windows NT installation files and click Continue.
  4. Select the port your modem is installed on and click OK.
  5. Click OK to let Remote Access Setup attempt to detect your modem.
  6. If your modem is detected, click OK. If your modem is not detected, contact your modem manufacturer for an updated modem.inf file.
  7. For Port Usage select Dial Out Only and click OK.
  8. Click the Network button, uncheck NetBEUI, and click OK.
  9. Check TCP/IP, uncheck IPX, and click OK, and then Continue.
  10. Enter the full path to the Windows NT installation files if prompted and then click Continue.
  11. Click OK.
  12. If you receive a notice about NetBEUI just click OK.
  13. If you have a network card installing in your computer you may see additional configuration screens. These are not related to Remote Access Service.
  14. Click Restart Now.
  15. Continue to section 2.

1C. Initial configuration of Remote Access Service

  1. Select Remote Access Service and click the Configure button.
  2. Select your modem and click Configure.
  3. For Port Usage select Dial Out Only and click OK.
  4. Click Network, uncheck NetBEUI, and click OK.
  5. Check TCP/IP, uncheck IPX, then click OK, and then click Continue.
  6. Enter the full path to the Windows NT installation files if prompted. Click Continue and then OK.
  7. You may be presented with a TCP/IP configuration window. You do not need to change any of the settings, just click OK.
  8. If you receive a message about NetBEUI, just click OK.
  9. Click Restart Now.
  10. Continue to section 2.

2. Configuring Remote Access Service

  1. From Program Manager double-click the Remote Access Service program group, and then double-click the Remote Access icon.
  2. If you receive a message that the phone book is empty, click OK.
  3. Click Add, and enter the following information:
    • Entry Name: MyWebTimes

    • For the telephone number use the following:

      • 433-9000 - Ottawa access number with 56k connect speeds
      • 673-4011 - Streator access number with 56k connect speeds
    • Description: MyWebTimes
  4. Uncheck Authenticate using current username and password.
  5. Click Advanced.
  6. For Port enter the port number your modem is installed on.
  7. Click Modem.
  8. For Initial Speed use one of the following:
    • 19200 for a 14.4k modem
    • 38400 for a 28.8k or 33.6k modem
    • 57600 for a 56k modem
  9. Check the hardware features that are supported by your modem.
  10. Uncheck Enter modem commands manually and click OK.
  11. Click the Network button and select PPP.
  12. Uncheck NetBEUI, check TCP/IP, uncheck IPX, and uncheck Request LCP extensions.
  13. Click the TCP/IP Settings button.
  14. For IP Address choose Server Assigned.
  15. Select Use specific name server addresses and enter the following:
    • DNS: 204.176.110.106
    • DNS backup: 64.4.170.107
  16. Check Use VJ header compression and Use default gateway on remote network, and click OK, and click OK again.
  17. Click the Security button.
  18. Select Accept any authentication including clear text.
  19. Choose None for Before dialing and After dialing.
  20. Click OK and OK again.

3. Set Up an Account

Before you can proceed any further you will need to call MyWebTimes Customer Service at (815) 433-9700 or 673-4014 during the phone support hours and provide us with the information to create an account. Please be ready with the contact information for the account holder - including name, address, and telephone number. You will also be asked to select a username and password.


A username is the identity you will be known as on the system and will also be the first part of your email address. For example, if you choose a username of JoeSomebody then your email address would be joesomebody@MyWebTimes.com. Usernames are restricted to being between 3 and 12 characters long with letters and/or numbers only, no spaces or other special punctuation is allowed.


The password is a special code known only to yourself and is required along with the username to access your account on our system. When choosing a password it is suggested that you use something which is not easily guessed by others to prevent your account from being accessed without your knowledge. The password must be between 3 and 9 characters with letters and/or numbers only (no spaces or punctuation) and cannot be the same as your username.

4. Connect to MyWebTimes


Select the MyWebTimes entry you created and click Dial. You will be asked to provide the username and password that you selected when you created your account. Leave the Domain box blank and then click OK. Check Minimize on dial as well as Do not display this message in the future, and click OK.
