Q. It used to be that after polling places closed, election judges from throughout the county would personally travel to the La Salle County Clerk’s office in Ottawa, where final vote totals would be announced. But within recent years, several (I think five) locations have been established in the county, and after polling places close, election judges go to whichever location they're assigned to, then transmit vote outcomes of their precincts to Ottawa. Could you tell us more about how the information is transmitted; how the County Clerk’s Office keeps the system secure?

Q. How much humidity should be maintained in a home during winter? A. Jerry Faw, owner of Energy Specialists of Toluca, said there is no specific level. Numerous factors come into play, including the condition of the windows and the style of heating unit. Faw said a furnace humidifier should be set between 30 percent and 50 percent. However, if any moisture appears on the windows, then the setting should be lowered. The specific level is dependent on what a particular resident prefers. Some people keep their thermostat at 65 degrees, others at 68 degrees and still others at 72 degrees or higher. The level of humidity varies with each individual. But the main way to recognize if the humidity is too high is if moisture appears on the windows.

Q. With spring here, summer can’t be far away! Soon everyone will be getting their pools in shape and ready for the big swim. Streator seems to have an unusual number of “blow-up ring ”-type pools. These are the small, portable type that set up in minutes and have their own pump and filter so they can stay up all summer. People with in-ground pools or above-ground, deck pools are usually very careful to deny access to their pools for fear of unsupervised use and ultimate liability and/or loss of life. These small, portable pools are just set up in the corner of the yard sometimes within a few feet of the front sidewalk. No deterrent is provided to deny access.
They contain plenty of water to allow a small child to quickly drown or become unconscious. Streator doesn’t appear to have any type of ordinance restricting their use or placement. Who bears the brunt of the liability if something happens involving one of these easily accessible pools? Would it be the city of Streator for not properly policing these pools? Would it be the homeowner or in many cases the landlord who owns the property where the pool is located?
