Tomorrow is the big one — the game we football fans, gingerly cuddling our bowls of chips and salsa, have been waiting for all year.

Arguably, the best two teams in the NFL will battle it out for the title of World Champions in Super Bowl XLIV. I personally think the Saints will be outmatched, but overall, I just want to see a great football game.

If you're a sports fan, this is a great time of year to get your sports mojo going. As if the Super Bowl is not enough, next Sunday is the Daytona 500, NASCAR's official start to its season, which is like playing the Super Bowl as the season opener. Then later that week, pitchers and catchers will begin to report to spring training camps in Arizona and Florida, thus signaling the start to another long baseball season.

But before NASCAR and baseball can kick off, next Friday night we'll celebrate the excitement and pageantry of the opening ceremonies for the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.

A couple of years ago, I wrote a column about bringing the Winter Olympics to Ottawa. I got then and still get feedback. I got the idea while watching the men's luge competition in the 2006 Winter Olympics. I noticed the guys riding the luge down that icy tunnel of death had the same look on their face I do when driving down Congress Street.

That's when it hit me. Maybe Ottawa should get in the bidding to host a future Winter Olympics!

Now if you're new to this column, let me tell you I have had other ideas in the past to bring greatness to Ottawa. I brought up the idea of bringing a minor league baseball team to Ottawa. Our team name was going to be the Tenderloins, since I thought it was important to capture the flavor of the area. I'm still waiting to hear back on that one.

But the Olympics had traction. Think of the locations in and around Ottawa where Olympic events could be staged. We could have the luge run go right down Congress Street. Since there's no hill, we'd have to get one of those huge rubber band things like Hot Wheels used to have, and fling the luge down the street, but I think it would be every bit as exciting.

The bobsled run could be at the toboggan hill in Allen Park. Sure, it wouldn't be very long, but part of the competition could be to pick up the bobsled, run it back to the top of the hill and go down again. Best time for three round trips would be the winner.

Remember how the soccer field and tennis courts by Ottawa Township High School used to flood before the levee was built? Well, we could re-flood that area and have the skating right there on the tennis courts. Even leave the nets up to make things more interesting. I'd like to see one of the skating pairs do a triple lutz spinning axle while trying to dodge the nets. Oh man, that would be so cool.

I'm still looking for volunteers to serve on a steering committee that could later serve as a caucus to determine the viability of bringing the Winter Olympics to Ottawa. I think 2022 is still unclaimed. Oh boy, this could be great!
