A panel discussion on the 100th anniversary of the Cherry Mine Disaster, which was recordedat the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library in Springfield Nov. 7, will be aired on C-SPAN 3 Saturday, Nov. 28 beginning at 12: 11 p. m.
Print this storyTimes Staff Writer Steve Stout, who wrote a historical novel on the tragedy, and other Cherry mine authors discussed the disaster, which killed 259 men and boys in one of the nation's worse mining accidents. Other writers on the panel included; Karen Tintori, "Trapped: The 1909 Cherry Mine Disaster;" Dean and Lorena (Galletti) Cotton, "Oneness: Angiolina, The 1909 Cherry Mine Disaster;" and Ronald Bluemer, "Fire Below!" Each author spoke about the tremendous loss of life that occurred inside the coal mine Nov. 13, 1909, and the contributions to worker and mine safety that resulted from this and similar other disasters. Also featured on the program is La Salle musician Ray Tutaj Jr., who performed several of his original acoustic songs based on the disaster. After its broadcast, the video also will be available for viewing on C-SPAN's Web site, www.c-span.org. |
