A 24-hour Honor Guard supported by veteran groups will be on duty at Washington Square in Ottawa from 6 p.m. Friday, Nov. 6, through Saturday, Nov. 7, for a vigil to honor veterans.
Print this storyThe Honor Guards will assemble at the American Legion meeting room, 901 N. La Salle St. Opening ceremonies will begin at 5:30 p.m. Friday at the War Memorial at the north end of Washington Square. The veteran organizations will have a combined Color Guard to present the flags, led by Capt. James Nanouski. Boy Scout Troop 44 will lead the Pledge of Allegiance, followed by a benediction by American Legion Chaplain Charles Jones. Wreaths then will be placed at the memorial. Ottawa Mayor Robert Eschbach will be the guest speaker. The first Honor Guard this year is Navy veteran Jim McCarrens. He stands to honor all veterans, but especially his uncle, James McCarrens, a Marine Corps soldier who was killed at Pearl Harbor. The closing ceremonies will begin at 6 p.m. Saturday. The flags will be retired, and the event will proceed with a rifle salute by a combined veteran group rifle squad, which will be followed by "Taps." |
