Hunters are invited to visit nearby state police firing ranges in La Salle and Pontiac later this month to prepare for the upcoming deer hunting season.

Hunters are encouraged to test fire and sight in their shotguns between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 14 at the ranges. There is no charge and targets are provided. Shooters must have valid firearm owners identification cards and must transport guns unloaded and cased. Reservations must be made at the La Salle range by calling Sgt. Bob Cessna at 815-224-1171 ext. 117 and at the Pontiac range by calling Trooper David Diller at 815-844-1500.

The deer season for hunting with shotguns, handguns and muzzleloaders runs Nov. 20-22 and Dec. 3-6. The antlerless deer season for the same types of gun is Dec. 31 to Jan. 3 and Jan. 15-17. The muzzleloader-only season is Dec. 11-13.

State police ranges in Joliet, Pawnee, Effingham and Pecatonica are also participating.
