Dolphins swimmers start out strong

The Ottawa YMCA Dolphins opened their season with a triangular meet at Kewanee on Saturday.

Ottawa's girls team claimed a victory while the boys team was second. For the meet, the Dolphins had 37 first-place finishes, 31 second-place finishes and 11 third-place finishes.

Four individuals claimed victories in three individual events.

Jill Bottarini had three wins at the girls 11-12 level, including a new team record. That new team record came when she won the 50-yard freestyle in 27.00 seconds. Bottarini added victories in the 50 butterfly in 31.77 seconds and the 200 individual medley in 2 minutes, 37.47 seconds.

In the same age group, Emily Hines claimed three first-place finishes, including the 100 freestyle in 1:09.56. Hines added wins in the 200 freestyle (2:30.60) and the 50 backstroke (36.00 seconds).

Elsewhere in the 11-12 girls grouping, the 200 medley relay team of Hines, Elle Goetz, Jill Bottarini and Abigail Dominis finished first in 2:25.91. The 200 freestyle relay quartet of Torie Harth, Tanner Geiger, Miranda Ballowe and Tabatha Maslanka was first in 2:50.97. Sydney Froisland posted a second-place time of 50.33 seconds in the 50 breaststroke.

Samuel Rappeport had two state cuts out of three events at the boys 15-21 level. Rappeport finished first with a state cut of 23.19 seconds in the 50 freestyle and another of 1:56.70 in the 200 freestyle. Rappeport added a first-place time of 52.65 seconds in the 100 freestyle.

Scott Conrad won the boys 15-21 100 backstroke in 1:04.59. He added second-place finishes in the 50 freestyle (24.91 seconds) and the 100 freestyle (55.27 seconds).

Adam Hines had three top finishes in the boys 13-14 age group. He won the 50 freestyle in 26.34 seconds while adding first-place tallies in the 100 breaststroke (1:15.12) and the 200 individual medley (2:27.64).

Allison Borkowski won the girls 9-10 50 freestyle in 33.98 seconds and the 100 freestyle in 1:14.19. Teammates Julie Bottarini claimed the 50 backstroke in 40.49 seconds and the 100 individual medley in 1:26.93. Julie Bottarini also was second in the 100 freestyle with a time of 1:20.28.

Elle Goetz posted a state-cut time of 41.43 seconds to win the 50 breaststroke. Cara Murphy touched the wall first in the 50 butterfly with a clocking of 40.32 seconds. Murphy added a second-place time of 1:32.03 in the 100 individual medley.

The 200 medley relay team of Julie Bottarini, Mallory Pistick, Murphy and Borkowski took first in 2:34.10, which also was a state cut. The 200 freestyle relay grouping of MaryGrace Marshall, Dana Smeets, Sophi Thorsen and Natalie Rodeghier took first in 2:48.05. The 200 freestyle relay team of Sloan Gayan, Mallory Pitstick, Cara Murphy and Allison Borkowski was second in 2:55.06.

Elsewhere at the girls 9-10 level, Mallory Pitstick had second-place finishes in the 50 freestyle (36.28 seconds) and the 50 breaststroke (43.90 seconds). Natalie Rodeghier was second in the 50 backstroke (42.43 seconds) and Marshall placed second in the 50 butterfly (46.30 seconds).

At the girls 13-14 level, Kendra Norman won the 50 freestyle in 29.99 seconds. She also won the 100 backstroke in 1:12.20 while taking second in the 200 individual medley (3:03.21).

The 200 medley relay team of Norman, Quinn Kistenfeger, Miah Froisland and Sydney Froisland finished first in 2:28.61. The 200 freestyle relay quartet of Brittany Krause, Goetz, Sydney Froisland and Dominis placed first in 2:33.89.

Individually, Quinn Kistenfeger was second in the 200 freestyle in 2:33.07 while utilizing a time of 1:30.53 to place second in the 100 breaststroke.

At the girls 15-21 level, Katy Gealow produced first-place finishes in the 500 freestyle (6:51.72) and the 200 freestyle (2:28.87). The 200 medley relay team of Lexi Landis, Lauren McQuen, Gealow and Anna Schmidt was second in 2:57.27. The 200 freestyle relay grouping of Schmidt, Landis, McQuen and Miah Froisland placed second in 2:34.31.

Jacob Ovanic won the boys 8-and-under 25 breaststroke in 24.14 seconds and the 25 butterfly in 25.07 seconds. He added a second-place time of 1:49.67 in the 100 individual medley.

The 100 medley relay team of Zach Nelson, Jacob Ovanic, Sam McQuen and Zak Maslanka took first with a state cut time of 1:34.33, and the 100 freestyle relay quartet of Cameron Rodeghier, Caleb Ballowe, Derren Geiger and Joseph Ovanic was first in 1:59.69.

Sam McQuen was second in the 25 butterfly with a time of 25.45 seconds.

At the boys 9-10 level, Jordan Ovanic won the 50 freestyle in 35.09 seconds. He also was first in the 100 individual medley (1:31.89) and second in the 100 freestyle (1:20.72).

Teammate Joel Botarini claimed a victory in the 200 freestyle with a clocking of 2:21.86. He also was second in the 50 freestyle in 29.98 seconds and the 50 butterfly in 35.18 seconds.

Quinn Gray had second-place finishes in the 50 freestyle (36.16 seconds) and the 50 backstroke (43.43 seconds). The 200 medley relay team of Nicholas Bennett, Jordan Ovanic, Joel Bottarini and Gray took second in 2:56.57.

Mackenzie Olson won the girls 7-8 25 backstroke in 21.07 seconds, while Chloe Cottingham was second in the 25 freestyle with a time of 21.62 seconds. Cottingham also was second in the girls 8-and-under 50 freestyle (54.63 seconds). The 100 freestyle relay team of Antonia Froisland, Chloe Skaggs, Karrington Benson and Cottingham was second in 1:44.48.

At the boys 6-and-under level, Ryan Nelson was second in the 25 freestyle (26.40 seconds) and the 25 backstroke (30.99 seconds). Sam McQuen produced a second-place time of 18.59 seconds in the boys 7-8 25 freestyle. Zach Nelson was second in the 25 backstroke with a clocking of 23.02 seconds. Nelson also was second in the boys 8-and-under 50 freestyle (43.53 seconds).
