PREP ROUNDUP: Sandwich's Gaydos moves on to state cross country meet -- Flanagan-Cornell earns volleyball regional title

EAST PEORIA — Sandwich cross country runner Mike Gaydos will compete in the state's featured event.

Gaydos was one of five individuals not a member of qualifying team to advance out of the East Peoria Class 2A Sectional on Saturday. Those five individuals, plus the five teams that qualified, will compete in the state meet next weekend at Detweiler Park in Peoria.

Gaydos finished 14th overall with a time of 16 minutes, 54 seconds for the Indians, who finished 19th overall as a team.

Outside Gaydos, Steph Clark produced a 66th-place time of 17:55 and Joe Gaesser was 136th in 19:25. Matt Lundeen finished 144th overall in 19:52, and AustinPearson was 147th overall in 20:15.

"We ran well and we were happy with the results," said Sandwich coach Jeff Smith. "The whole course was muddy, windy and cold. Everyone's times were slow. We just got a lot of rain at the wrong times all over the state."

Streator had two individuals compete in the boys race. Cristian Martinez concluded a solid junior season by finishing 71st overall in 17:58. Teammate Willie Clark was 126th overall in 19:03.

On the girls side, April Jennings claimed 89th place in 22:30 for Sandwich. Teammate Laurel Skorup, who was fighting an illness all week, was not able to finish.

Streator's Annie Richards produced a time of 24:34, placing her 131st in the field.

Tarmann, Janssen just miss state spots for Fieldcrest

At the Elmwood-Brimfield Sectional, Fieldcrest's boys and girls teams were unable to advance to the state meet, but still had some solid individual performances.

Kinsly Tarmann led the boys unit, finishing 24th overall in 16 minutes, 43 seconds. James Leigh was 33rd overall in 16:59 while Collin Mangold claimed 47th place in 17:16.

Guthrie Wyss produced a time of 18:05, good enough for 87th place. Jake Meyer was 111th overall in 18:42.

Over on the girls side, Katie Janssen didn't miss qualifying for state by much. The Lady Knights harrier crossed in 20:10, good enough for 22nd place.

Alyssa Martynowski was 83rd overall in 22:11 while Jenna Woerner was 116th in 23:48. Kristen Stromberg finished with a 124th-place time of 24:11. Marlee Gensler was 128th overall in 24:29.

Another regional title for Flanagan-Cornell

RURAL VARNA — Flanagan-Cornell claimed its second straight regional crown and its seven in the last eight years by beating Roanoke-Benson 26-24, 25-13 on Saturday in the Midland Class 1A Regional.

The victory lifts the Lady Falcons (15-19) into the Woodland Sectional against Tri-Valley on Tuesday at 7 p.m. Tri-Valley upended Heyworth 25-23, 25-17 in the LeRoy Regional championship match.

The two teams met back on Sept. 15 with Tri-Valley (25-2) claiming a 25-15, 25-21 victory.

Kenzie Mogged led theLady Falcons against Roanoke-Benson with 10 kills. Devyn Woodburn tallied six kills.

Jessica Runyon had 10 service points.

Girls swimming

3 all-conference performances lead Ottawa to third place


At Byron, Ottawa continued its path back to success with a solid third-place finish at the Northern Illinois Independent Championships.

The Lady Pirates scored 201 points, behind champion Sterling (285) and Byron (275). Ottawa was far ahead of fourth-place Morrison (168).

Ottawa had one event champion coming from the 200-yard freestyle relay team. Carly Kaminke, Cortney Clements, Caitlin Chrzanowski and Brittnie Dean combined to produce a stellar time of 1 minute, 46.57 seconds.

There were two additional second-place finishes for OTHS. Kaminke was second in the 200 freestyle with a time of 2:10.26 as well as second in the 100 freestyle (58.82 seconds).

Those three efforts earned all-conference honors for the Ottawa athletes.

Elsewhere, the 200 medley relay team of Dean, Elaina Bruck, Kaminke and Clements finished third overall in 2:05.23. Dean was fourth individually in the 50 freestyle (26.27 seconds) and fifth in the 100 backstroke (1:06.77).

McKaylah Bittner was fifth in the 100 freestyle with a time of 1:03.92. Rachel Halm produced a clocking of 2:21.13 in the 200 freestyle, placing her sixth. Halm also was sixth in the 500 freestyle with a time of 6:26.39.

Alyssa LeSeure was sixth in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:19.97.

"This meet was such a confidence builder for the girls and for the coaches," said OTHS coach Jenny Borkowski. "The performances of the girls were extraordinary. I am so proud to be their coach. It was as if they didn't skip a beat. They were right on."

Ottawa takes 4th in Northern Illinois meet


At Byron, Ottawa scored 179 points to finish fourth in the Northern Illinois Independent Championships.

Cortney Clements claimed an individual title in the 50-yard freestyle. She touched the wall in 27.61 seconds for the victory.

Elsewhere, the 200 medley relay team of Lacey Walsh, Alyssa LeSeure, Caitlin Chrzanowski and Jesyca Crouch finished second in 2 minutes, 10.21 seconds. The 200 freestyle relay grouping of McKaylah Bittner, Kristen Timmer, Crouch and Walsh clocked in at 1:57.52 for second place.

Torey Borkowski was third in the 200 freestyle (2:31.41). The 400 freestyle relay team of Marcia Kreifels, Borkowski, Bruck and Rachel Halm finished third in 4:36.70.

Kreifels was fifth in the 200 individual medley (3:00.61), and Crouch was fifth in the 50 freestyle (29.53 seconds).
