URBANA — Jean F. Hill, 84, of Urbana, formerly of Streator, died Saturday evening, Oct. 25, at Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana.

Graveside services will be at 9 a.m. Saturday at St. Mary’s Cemetery, Streator.Cremation rites have been accorded. Solon, Baker & Telford Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Born Oct. 28, 1923, in Streator, she was a daughter of William and Angela (Aschinger) Lewis. She was raised by her mother and Dr. Harry Campbell Hill, who adopted Jean and her siblings.

She is survived by a sister, Carolyn Dickey of Streator; a sister-in-law, Rosemary Hill; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her stepfather Dr. Harry Hill; and a brother, William Hill.

Jean graduated from Streator Township High School in 1941. She later attended Rosary College from 1941 to 1943. She graduated from the University of Wisconsin in 1945 with a Bachelor of Arts in economics. She received a Master of Science in social work from the University of St. Louis in 1950.

Jean was employed for a number of years as a child welfare case worker for Catholic Charities of St. Louis. She came to the University of Illinois at Urbana in September 1957 as head resident director at the newly opened Allen Hall. In 1961, she was appointed Assistant Dean of Women for Independent Women. In 1966-68, she headed a pilot program of support services for incoming minority students. She served as Associate Director of Special Educational Opportunity Programs (Project 500) from 1968 to 1974. She served as the University Ombudsman in 1975-76. She finally finished her career at the University as Associate Dean of Students from 1976 until her retirement in 1986. She retired emerita.
