Print this storyWith an announcement that John McCain and Barack Obama are looking to debate each other several times in the Lincoln-Douglas style, I felt Ottawa should jump at the chance to be the host for the first one. Surely the mayor, or local Republican or Democratic parties, or Chamber of Commerce could make speedy contact to offer our city to the process. This would be an outstanding forum to display and market Ottawa on a world stage. With proper security, it could even be conducted in Washington Square at the exact location of the first Lincoln-Douglas Debate. The immediate benefits would be to all of our hotels, food and beverage places, and area businesses overall. By the sheer number of media members, party leaders, etc. the town would be full for days in advance, plus the long-term effect on the Ottawa community would be terrific, financially, and touristwise. This would have a major impact on Ottawa, and let us showcase what "Destination Ottawa" can offer to visitors and locals alike. This would have to be done quickly, as from news reports, the first debate is planned for the first part of July! Just in time before Riverfest, too! LARRY THOMAS Ottawa |
