Angelina White, of Ottawa, president of the Illinois chapter of the International Breast Milk Project, flew to Monrovia, Calif., last week to witness IBMP's biggest breast milk delivery to date be shipped to Durbin, South Africa.
Print this storyThe IBMP is the first organization to provide donor breast milk from the United States to babies orphaned by disease and poverty in Africa. More than 1,000 women have donated milk. A total of 25 percent is sent to Africa and 75 percent stays in the United States for critically ill babies. The shipment is enough to feed six infants for one year -- that's 9,000 bottles. About 100 people were present to watch the shipment leave the United States. On Thursday, White toured Prolacta Bioscience, where the milk is collected, tested, processed and shipped. White and her family attended a reception that night in celebration of the project's milestone. ABC World News covered the event and White was interviewed by Kate Snow, co-anchor of ABC News' weekend edition of "Good Morning America." "She was very nice to me. Very personal," White told The Times. "The event was just amazing." The segment, which aired on ABC World News and Good Morning America, is online at http://abcnews.go.com/Video/playerIndex?id=3752639. In the clip, White can be seen helping to prepare a package for shipment. White has donated more than 1,000 ounces to IBMP and, as president, helps spread awareness about IBMP and recruits volunteers. -- STEPHANIE SZUDA stephanies@mywebtimes.com 815-431-4087 |
