A mother and her young son from Amboy, who were related to Ottawa residents, died in a traffic collision last week in Southern Lee County.

Dr. Jennifer B. Thompson, 35, died Wednesday and her 4-year-old son, Samuel Keith Thompson, died the following day.

State Police said Jennifer was driving a sport utility vehicle south at about 8:10 a.m., Wednesday when she failed to stop her vehicle at a stop intersection at Route 30. Her vehicle was struck by a westbound semitrailer driven by Verl Koller, 54, of Coal Valley. Koller was not hurt.

Jennifer was not wearing a seat belt. She died at KSB Hospital in Dixon, while Samuel died at Rockford Memorial Hospital. Another one of her sons in her vehicle, 1-year-old Charles, was hurt and also flown to Rockford Memorial Hospital. He was listed this morning in critical condition.

Jennifer, who was a veterinarian, was married to a former Ottawa man, Brad Thompson. Jennifer's parents-in-law, who were also Samuel's paternal grandparents -- Terry and Nancy Thompson -- live in Ottawa, as does great-grandmother Marguerite "Peg" Thompson.

Obituaries are on page B4.
