SANDWICH -- The first Intertstate Eight Conference game to count in the standings of the new league did not go particularly well for the Sandwich Indians Friday night.
Print this storyThe Indians turned the ball over four times and Manteno quarterback Daniel Kizior ran for 198 yards and threw for 83 as the visiting Panthers posted a 38-16 victory. "We were pretty bad at times," said Sandwich coach Derek Avery. "They have some skill players over there who are very big and fast and very athletic, too. "Penalties, turnover -- it seemed like every time we made a good play, something would bite us. Forget about winning a game when you turn it over like we did. You won't even be in an I-8 game when you do that. Manteno made us pay for every one of them." Manteno scored on its first possession of the night on an 80-yard run by Kizior (the point-after try failed), and Sandwich fumbled the Panther kickoff, giving the visitors the ball at the Indian 23-yard line. Six plays later, it was Manteno 12, Sandwich 0, as Kizior ran the final six yards for a Panther TD at 3:32. Manteno tallied again early in the second period on a 10-play drive, which culminated in a fourth down15-yard TD pass from Kizior to Corey Prince (Kizior added the point-after kick). The Indians fumbled the ball away again a minute and a second after the Manteno touchdown, with Nick Henshaw recovering the ball for the Panthers. It took Manteno less than three minutes to get on the board with its fourth touchdown of the half on a 15-yard pass from Kizior to Mitch Goad. The half concluded with the purple and white club up 25-0. Sandwich started off the second half in good form, picking up three first downs and moving the ball to the Manteno 18-yard line in five snaps along with the aid of three Panther penalties. On first-and-five from the 18, the Indians committed their third turnover of the night as Manteno's Brent Mason covered a fumble just inside the out-of-bounds line. This time, however, the Indian defense stiffened and held the Panthers scoreless through the entire third quarter. At 10:29 of the fourth quarter Kizior ran for another six-yard TD and kicked the PAT to give his team a 32-zip advantage. Steve Weinlander came in to quarterback the Indians on their next possession and he made an immediate impact, throwing a 21-yard touchdown pass to Justin Mager and flipping a two-point conversion pass to Gil Buttels. After Manteno (3-1, 1-0) went three-and-out, the Indians went 73 yards in six plays with Weinlander throwing a couple of completions for 25 yards and Buttels going the final yard for a TD. Buttels also tacked on the PAT on a sweep around left end to make it 32-16 with 4:39 to play. Manteno wrapped up the scoring with a 10-yard pass from Kezior to Jim Sandling for a touchdown with 1:25 to go. "They got a lot of momentum rolling on us in the first half and we just couldn't stop it," Avery said. "In the second half, we have a good opening drive, come down the field and fumble again. "We didn't tackle very well. We were leaving our feet with our heads down. We work on that every day and it wasn't like they did anything we didn't plan against. Their quarterback is a tailback playing the quarterback position. "Steven (Weinlander) is a senior who has been with us for a long time and he does a nice job for us. He can see over the line and that made a difference. We'll look at him a little more and regroup and get ready for Lisle." Weinlander finished with 78 yards passing, completing three-of-three from scrimmage and another on the PAT. Lance Futrell was the leading rusher with 45 yards and Buttels was the top receiver with a pair of catches for 37 yards. Chris McGary ran three times for 38 yards.
